SISTER CATHERINE JULIE formerly of Belmont. Sister Catherine Julie Cunningham’s retirement marked the end of the longest term of years in office among college Presidents in Northern California. Sister served 24 years as President of the College of Notre Dame in Belmont leading the college into coeducation. Sister guided the college while the enrollment rose from 200 to 1400 students, she added 10 buildings and broadened the curriculum. In 1981, Sister served as College Chancellor. Sister served for 12 years as Principal of three Notre Dame High Schools. Sister has also served as a Director of the Far West Laboratory for Educational Research and Development in San Francisco and as Director of the Independent Colleges of Northern California. Sister Catharine Julie was the recipient of the Soroptimists Burlingame-San mateo Women Helping Women Award. She was an honorary D.H.L. of the University of San Francisco and has been honored as Belmont’s Citizen of the Year. Sister was a leader in programs for education in justice, peace, and women’s concerns.
