Bessie Baughn

Deceased
BESSIE BAUGHN has a motto: “If there is a need, I will try to fill it.” That helps explain the amazing lost of boards and organizations for which she has provided a continuous volunteer presence. Bessie has been Volunteer of the Year twice, Woman of Distinction, Woman of the Year and received other awards too numerous to mention. Several major achievements include founding San Bruno Volunteer Services, Operation Video providing videos to residents of nursing homes and the Childrens’ Toy Box, providing toys and games to hospitalized children being treated for cancer. In many instances, Bessie not only puts in time and energy, but also her own money to help start and sustain these programs and services. Each year she holds a special holiday party for disabled children and their families. Bessie is also known for her weekly column in the Independent where she encourages community work and volunteering. Though unable to walk without assistance, Bessie remains unstoppable, taking advantage of SamTrans and other public transportation to continue her many efforts. Helping those in need, especially children and seniors, keeps this woman going. Now living in an assisted care facility, Bessie still ventures all over the county giving her time and sharing her incredible spirit.
