THE HON. JANE WINTERS POWELL was Daly City’s first woman Council member and first woman Mayor. The mother of six children of her own, she served as foster parent to 47 emotionally disturbed teenagers. She is co-founder and current coordinator of John’s Closet, a source of new clothes and shoes for impoverished elementary school children. She has campaigned for bus service to the College of San Mateo, location of Seton Hospital in Daly City, the building of Skyline College, and bonds to build schools, swimming pools and parks. She was named California State Legislature’s Woman of the Year in 1986 and has received numerous PTA awards for outstanding service. In Daly City, Westmoor High School named its football field “Jane Powell Field”.
