IRENE CHENG is truly a Renaissance person, writes her nominator. She is number one in her senior class at Mills High, with a 4.0 grade point average. She has received the Principal’s Award for Outstanding Achievement for the last four years and is a National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist. In addition, she is a gifted writer and poet, a former violinist in the California Youth Symphony Junior Orchestra, and has won public speaking awards in both Mandarin and English. Her community service contributions include Peer Helpers and PALS, whose purpose is to help students adjust to high school and to life. She has served as a Candy Striper at a local hospital, and coordinator at her school’s free tutoring program, and president of the Interact Club, a service organization sponsored by the Rotary Club. She was chosen from 210 applicants for the position of Student Member of the California State Board of Education.
