George LaBerge

Former Redwood City Mayor Georgi LaBerge has untiringly served her community both in the political arena and in numerous volunteer leadership positions to promote pride in the environment, encourage family reading, and provide educational opportunity for others. Georgi was first appointed to the Redwood City Park and Recreation Commission in 1982, where she inaugurated a program to “adopt” the parks. Elected to Redwood City Council in 1986, she continued her efforts to protect the environment by founding the Pride and Beautification Committee and, as mayor, was instrumental in establishing Redwood City’s first sister city, Zhyhai, China.

Georgi co-founded the Redwood City Library Foundation, developing a “Traveling Story Time” program to encourage family reading and a teen computer study center. Today she is actively working on a campaign to supply books for the planned Redwood Shores library. In 1996, Georgi joined the Board of Directors of the San Mateo Community Colleges Foundation, becoming executive director in 2001. There she has succeeded in bringing a diverse set of supporters together to further projects such as building a police academy, renovating the theater and developing a scholarship program. She has also been a willing mentor, encouraging students to get involved in volunteer service, a calling she has answered all of her life, enriching her community in all she does.
