MONICA JIMENEZ is 15 years old and lives with her mother. Because of serious financial hardships, they have moved frequently and Monica attended several middle schools during a period of two years. Still, in a rigorous college preparatory program, she has maintained a straight “A” grade average. Her service to her community has been truly extraordinary, writes her nominator. Two summers ago, before her first year in high school. She volunteered daily at the Burlingame Retirement Inn, taking walks with, reading to, and providing companionship for elderly residents. She has continued to work through the San Mateo County Volunteer Center, she has recruited other student volunteers, and co-chaired a county conference on Youth and Volunteer Service. She is a member of the Burlingame High School swim team and drama club.
